This Spicy Thai Peanut Sauce is perfect for on top of noodles, as a dipping sauce, or even as a salad dressing! You get to control the spice with the amount of chili garlic paste and make it runnier or creamier with more or less water. And best of all? It takes about 5 minutes to make and couldn’t be easier.
Ingredients and Substitutions
Here’s what you’ll need to recreate this Spicy Thai Peanut Sauce at home:
- Peanut butter – An obvious ingredient in peanut sauce! Use whatever kind of peanut butter you prefer, though creamy peanut butter is definitely better here.
- Soy sauce – Adds salt, umami, and gets the flavor headed in the Thai direction.
- Lime juice – You need lime juice for the freshness and acidity it brings to the sauce. It also helps reinforce the Thai flavors.
- Water – I used 2 tbsp to help loosen up the sauce to where I wanted it. You may need to adjust this amount based on the type of peanut butter you use and how runny vs creamy you want the sauce.
- Chili garlic paste – Here’s where the spice comes in on this recipe! Add more or less depending on your spice preferences. If you don’t have this or can’t find it, sambal would also work. Even though it kind of looks like sriracha, I don’t recommend using sriracha as a substitute here.
- Ginger – Helps brighten up the sauce by adding a bit of non-spicy zing.
- Honey – This is optional depending on your taste, but I like it to help balance out the spice a bit.
- Garlic – Because you already have chili garlic paste in this sauce, go easy on the added garlic so it doesn’t take over the flavor. You can skip the added garlic if you prefer.
- Seasoned rice vinegar – The flavor and acidity of this ingredient really helps finish the sauce, even though you already have lime juice providing the bulk of the acidity you need here. Don’t skip it!
- Fish sauce – Here’s where even more umami comes in! Fish sauce is super potent, so be careful and don’t add more than the recipe says. It might smell weird, but I promise that it tastes amazing and really lends a Thai flavor profile to this sauce.
