Roasted Sweet Potatoes are such an easy side dish, especially for meal prepping or easy weeknight dinners. I love just cutting them in half, rubbing them with a bit of olive oil, giving them a generous sprinkle of spices, and then roasting them just like that on a foil lined baking sheet for quick cleanup. It really doesn’t get much easier.

I love the way the natural sugars in the sweet potatoes bubble up and caramelize in the oven – there’s something kind of sexy about it that makes this recipe seem more glamorous than it is. Once you see that caramelization and the skin starts to pull away from the potato flesh a bit, you know they’re perfectly roasted and tender. Finish them off with some butter and flakey sea salt before serving if that’s your jam (definitely don’t skip the salt though!).

serve it with:

Juicy Air Fryer Chicken

Chicken breasts tend to overcook and dry out easily, unless you use my secret to the getting the juiciest chicken breasts every time! All you need is salt, sugar, and a few spices to make your own chicken brine at home.

Ingredients and Substitutions

Here’s what you’ll need to recreate this Roasted Sweet Potatoes recipe at home:

  • Sweet potatoes – I mean, you can roast a lot of things, but if you don’t have sweet potatoes then you can’t have roasted sweet potatoes amirite?!
  • Olive oil – Or whatever cooking oil you prefer.
  • Spices – I used a pre-made spice mix, specifically the Lemon Pepper Dill flavor from Oh My Spice!
  • Salt – I sprinkle them with a bit of sea salt before they go in the oven and finish off the roasted potatoes with a pinch of flakey sea salt too. It really helps bring out the natural flavor and sweetness of the potatoes!

What’s the difference?

Sweet Potatoes vs Yams

Chances are that if you’re in the U.S., you haven’t seen many yams in your local grocery store – even if they’re labeled that way. Yams and sweet potatoes are actually totally different, unrelated tubers. That said, the “yams” you often see mislabeled in U.S. grocery stores are actually just a “soft” variety of sweet potatoes that needed a nickname to differentiate them from regular “hard” sweet potatoes. Are you confused yet? Here’s how to spot the differences between sweet potatoes and real yams:

  • Skin – yams have a thicker, brown skin that’s almost bark-like. Sweet potatoes have a thinner, reddish-brown skin.
  • Shape – Sweet potatoes are oval shaped with tapered ends, but yams are long and cylindrical.
  • Color – The flesh of sweet potatoes is usually bright orange, while yams have a pale white flesh.
  • Flavor – Sweet potatoes are actually sweet, whereas yams have a neutral flavor.
