This Blue Lagoon Protein Smoothie looks like a beautiful blue lagoon thanks to blue spirulina powder, plus it packs 14 grams of protein per serving! The tropical flavors are perfectly refreshing for hot summer days and will have you feeling energized and ready to tackle the day! Keep reading for my tips on how to make it ahead if you want to meal prep it.

Ingredients and Substitutions
Here’s what you’ll need to recreate this Blue Lagoon Protein Smoothie:
- Banana – Frozen banana makes the ultimate creamy smoothie, and we’re using just enough here for that creaminess without overwhelming the recipe with banana flavor.
- Pineapple – Bring the tropical flavors with some frozen pineapple!
- Protein powder – I used a regular vanilla whey protein powder here, but you could also use something like collagen if you prefer. Plant based protein powders may mess with the flavor of the smoothie, but if you have a vanilla one you love, go for it.
- Coconut milk – Boosts the creaminess of the smoothie with a hint of coconut flavor. Regular dairy milk or neutral-flavored plant based milks would work too.
- Shredded coconut – Totally optional, but I wanted to go for a bit more coconut flavor than the coconut milk brought to the party.
- Orange juice – A little goes a long way here, but other juices like pineapple or mango would be delicious too.
- Blue spirulina powder – The superfood secret ingredient to a gorgeous blue color and plenty of antioxidants! You could skip it if you don’t want to buy any.
- Ice
Blue Spirulina Benefits
Spirulina is actually an algae that’s dried and ground up to make a really smooth powder. In this case, it’s a gorgeous blue hue, but you can also find it in a blue-green or green color.
It’s considered a superfood and is packed with vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, and is even being tested by NASA as a nutrition supplement for astronauts on space missions. Spirulina is a great source of vitamins B1, B2, and B3, copper, and iron. It’s also high in the plant protein phycocyanin, which is what gives it the blue-green color and has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory benefits.

Meal Prep Smoothie Cubes!
If you don’t want to bust out your blender every morning, just freeze your already blended smoothie into cubes, stick them in a to-go cup, and pour milk over them in the morning as soon as you wake up. Let them sit, stirring occasionally for about 30-40 minutes while you get ready and voila! Your smoothie is ready to take on the go without waking up the whole family.

Worried your smoothie will get “watered” down? You could always skip the ice when you blend it up originally, but honestly, I loved this one with some extra milk because it gave it an almost milkshake like texture and flavor.
I used my Souper Cubes cookie dough trays for this, but an easy-to-remove ice cube tray like this would work too.
