Why You’ll Love This Dip

Cue the Dunkaroos nostalgia with this ridiculously easy birthday cake dip with 11 grams protein per serving! It’s a creamy, delicious treat that can be eaten with a spoon or graham snacks. Plus, my recipe has no raw flour!

Where are my fellow millennials at who remember Dunkaroos being absolute peak snacking back in the day?! Well, it’s time for our favorite snack to get a grown up glow up, complete with 11 grams of protein per serving. This Funfetti Protein Dip is ultra creamy, not too sweet, and delivers on those birthday cake flavors thanks to cake batter flavored protein powder, plenty of sprinkles, and just a touch of almond extract.

When I was doing some research to develop this recipe, I realized there were a ton of recipes for funfetti dip online that use raw flour. Like, full on bag of cake mix dumped right in and eaten raw with ingredients like Cool Whip or yogurt. Now don’t get me wrong, I would absolutely dive into that with no regard for the raw flour (or mayyyybe I’d actually heat it up like I do in this recipe), but if you’re serving this to kids or guests, raw flour is a no no. Read more here about raw flour safety and previous outbreaks linked to cake mixes. All that said, this recipe was never going to have a box of cake mix in it because I wanted something truly high protein and macro friendly anyway. But the more you know, you know? Stay safe out there, friends!

Ingredients and Substitutions

Here’s what you’ll need to recreate this Funfetti Protein Dip recipe:

  • Cream cheese – I don’t recommend subbing this out – be sure to soften it to room temp before mixing it up or you’ll end up with globs of cream cheese that won’t mix with the other ingredients.
  • Greek yogurt – A vanilla Greek yogurt is best here since the cream cheese is already bringing plenty of tanginess to the party.
  • Protein powder – This recipe needs both whey and casein protein powders. See below for why it’s critical that you include casein instead of using all whey!! For the whey, I used a cake batter flavored protein to help nail the funfetti flavor. I used this brand because it was readily available to me at Target, but there are others on the market that will also be delicious!
  • Vanilla and almond extract – Be really careful with the almond extract and don’t use more than the recipe calls for because it will quickly overwhelm the other flavors in the dip.
  • Sprinkles – The style of sprinkle you use here does actually matter. I went with the confetti “sequin” style, which is the closest to what my fellow millennials remember seeing in Dunkaroos dip back in the day. Some of the colors will bleed, but they hold their shape for a while. Do not use the tiny little ball sprinkles (nonpareils) – they will bleed color into the dip and dissolve almost immediately. I haven’t tried this recipe with the classic “jimmies” but those should work well here too.

why it’s important to use

Casein Protein Powder

Casein protein powder is critical to the success of this recipe! I call for both whey and casein in this Funfetti Protein Dip and you really do need to use both. The whey brings the birthday cake flavor to the party and the casein helps thicken up the dip and yields an ultra creamy texture. Using only whey would leave you with a runnier dip that’s not nearly as thick or creamy.

If you don’t have casein protein powder and don’t want to buy any, try using an instant pudding mix instead. Start out with about 1.5 tbsp of pudding mix and work your way up to 3 tbsp to see where you like the texture.

This cake batter flavored protein powder is also sold at Target in single serving packets so you can try before you buy a bigger bag. PEScience also offers a 5 serving packet of their Cake Pop flavored whey that’s available on Amazon and would work great in this recipe!

Ingredients

  • 8 oz 1/3 less fat cream cheese, softened to room temperature
  • 2 5.3 oz cups Dannon Light and Fit Vanilla Greek Yogurt
  • 1 scoop Clean Simple Eats Whey Isolate Protein Powder, Cake Batter, 34 grams
  • 3 tbsp Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard Casein Protein Powder, Creamy Vanilla, 25 grams
  • 2 tbsp confetti sprinkles
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/8 tsp almond extract

Instructions

  • Add all ingredients except sprinkles to a large bowl and mix with a hand mixer until smooth. Add sprinkles and mix until incorporated. Serve immediately with cookies, crackers, or fruit.

Tips & Tricks

Leftovers: Store any leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to a week. The sprinkle coloring will leach out into the dip the longer it sits, but it won’t impact the flavor. I don’t recommend freezing leftovers.
