Why You’ll Love This Recipe
With just a handful of ingredients, this creamy, dreamy dessert packs 15g protein per serving and is easy to prep ahead & enjoy sweet treats all week!
I’m back with another cottage cheese recipe in partnership with Breakstone’s, and I have to say, you are gonna want to bookmark this Cottage Cheese Chocolate Mousse! This recipe is ridiculously easy and actually makes a rich and creamy mousse that feels totally indulgent but still packs a protein punch.
No shade, but I’ve seen a lot of cottage cheese mousse recipes that are very obviously the texture of pudding (or even more liquidy than that) but are still being called a mousse. Sorry y’all, but I couldn’t stand for it and had to get you something that actually looks like mousse! Will cottage cheese based mousse ever fool you for the real texture of chocolate mousse? Not entirely. The real stuff is made with heavy cream, melted chocolate, sugar, and egg whites that are whipped into a delicious treat that is very much not macro-friendly. But if you’re looking for a dupe that has a rich chocolatey taste and is ultra creamy and reminiscent of mousse texture that won’t break the macro bank, you’ve come to the right spot!

Cottage Cheese FTW
Cottage cheese may be having a multi-year moment right now, but I’ve loved it for many more years as an easy and versatile way to hit my protein goals. Breakstone’s is made with high quality dairy and is the perfect choice for all your cottage cheese creations. As for the protein content, their 4% milk fat version boasts 12 grams of protein per 1/2 cup serving.

Ingredients and Substitutions
Here’s what you’ll need to recreate this Cottage Cheese Chocolate Mousse recipe:
- Breakstone’s Cottage Cheese – I went with the 4% milkfat version for this recipe, but 2% or fat free would work too. You get the creamiest, most mousse-like texture with 4%.
- Casein protein powder – Read and see below why I do NOT recommend subbing this out with whey protein!! Casein behaves totally differently and you can see it in action below.
- Dutch cocoa – I prefer dutch cocoa to regular unsweetened cocoa because it’s less bitter.
- Honey – I tried this recipe out with both honey and maple syrup and preferred the flavor with honey. You could also use sweetened condensed milk to sweeten it if you prefer.
- Espresso powder – This helps deepen the chocolate flavor of the mousse. You can skip it if you must, but you’ll lose out on some flavor.
- Vanilla – Don’t skip this one!

why it’s important to use
Casein Protein Powder
Casein protein powder is critical to the success of this recipe. It helps thicken up the mixture and yields an ultra creamy, mousse-like texture. Whey, on the other hand, leaves you with a runnier result – more like a pudding. While this recipe still tastes good when made with whey, the texture is totally different and not at all like a mousse.
If you have to sub it out, try using an instant pudding mix instead. Start out with about 2 tbsp of pudding mix and work your way up to 1/4 cup to see where you like the texture.

For the prettiest results, I also recommend using a large piping bag and a large star tip to pipe the mousse into jars before serving!
